Lorenzo Vella
Managing Owner
"Music is not just an electrical signal; it is a groove that safeguards an emotion."
Meet Lorenzo Vella: A Life in Analog
For Lorenzo Vella, sound engineer and founder of Bird Box Records, vinyl has never been a mere commercial medium, but a life mission that began in the mid-1970s. Raised amidst the warmth of vacuum tubes, early Philips and Revox recorders, and the mechanical allure of Thorens turntables, Lorenzo inherited from his father more than just technique—he inherited a true obsession for analog fidelity.
The Art of Restoration: From Ampex VPR to Multitrack Legends
His technical expertise was forged in environments where mechanical precision is everything. In the early 1990s, Lorenzo operated on the legendary Ampex VPR series recorders, broadcast machines of extreme complexity. Since then, his mission has been to save and bring back to light the giants of the analog era.
Through meticulous technical restoration, Lorenzo has given a voice back to legendary machines that shaped world music history: from colossal multitracks like the Studer A80 (16-track), the rare 3M M79 (24-track), and the Tascam ATR80 (24-track), to mastering masterpieces like the Ampex ATR102 (2-track)—the gold standard for warmth and dynamics. His expertise extends across the finest technology from Studer, Otari, and Telefunken.
This profound knowledge of tape mechanics and precision motors is the cornerstone of the BBR Analog Clinic. For Lorenzo, managing a thermal hysteresis cycle or performing deep cleaning on a rare vinyl requires the same dedication and meticulousness needed to calibrate a 24-track recorder.
A Sculptural Approach to Restoration
At the Clinic, Lorenzo operates as an "author of sound." Every intervention follows a rigorous protocol that reflects the artisanal care of his productions at Nightingale Studios:
-
Technical Heritage: The management of tension and temperature learned on Ampex and Studer systems translates into absolute mastery over the physical behavior of PVC.
-
Collector’s Sensibility: Every tracking test is an emotional verification, aimed at ensuring the record returns to offering that tactile interaction only physical media can provide.
-
Cultural Resistance: In an era of ephemeral streaming, his commitment is to restore value to the ownership of art. Restoring a vinyl means preserving a heritage that bears witness to the talent of both artists and craftsmen.
A Personal Promise
"When I return a record to a customer, knowing it will sound exactly as it did the day it left the press, I feel I have preserved a piece of history. At Bird Box Records, we don't accept compromises: our mission is to let you relive the unrepeatable magic of every performance."
