Case Study: Goniometric Analysis and

Structural Restoration – Serato Control Vinyl

1. Preliminary Diagnostics: The Tracking Test

Every intervention at the BBR Clinic begins with an objective instrumental analysis.

To identify any mechanical anomalies in the media, we utilize an audiophile-grade reference

signal chain to ensure maximum transparency of the captured data:

  • Source: Technics SL-Q2 / Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood.

  • Acquisition: Bryston Phono Preamp / Metric Halo ULN-8 Converters.

  • Digital Analysis: Pro Tools / MAAT Goniometer.

Pre-Restoration Analysis:

The vector analysis (as shown in the green screenshot) reveals an unstable and asymmetrical ellipse.

This pattern confirms a "dish" warping: the stylus does not track on a level plane,

causing phase distortion between channels and fluctuations in the 1kHz control tone.

Such instability radically compromises the precision of digital tracking within a DVS environment.

2. Operating Protocol: Baking & Hysteresis

To correct the physical memory of the PVC, the media undergoes a high-precision thermal-mechanical cycle:

  • Baking: 2 hours at a constant temperature of 54°C to relax molecular tension without affecting the groove geometry.

  • Hysteresis: 12 hours of passive cooling under constant pressure. This critical phase allows the material to "reprogram" itself, stabilizing into a perfectly flat position.

3. Post-Restoration Technical Results

Following two complete treatment cycles, the comparative report certifies the following results:

  • Planarity Recovery: Warping has been reduced to its structural minimum, with an estimated residual within 0.5%.

Only a very slight flexion persists on the outer edge; this was intentionally maintained

to preserve groove integrity, given the light gauge of this specific vinyl.

  • Phase Coherence: Goniometer analysis (visible in the second graph) shows a marked improvement.

The channels are now substantially aligned, ensuring a solid stereo image and a highly reliable control signal.

  • Signal Stability: The reference tone has been stabilized. Any residual fluctuations (detected at 983 Hz)

are attributable to the physiological mechanical limits of the tonearm when tracking pure technical signals.

The primary objective has been achieved

The support has regained its full operational functionality.

The restoration process has successfully eliminated needle skipping and harmonic distortions caused by warping,

making the disc once again suitable for professional sessions or AAA High-Res digital acquisitions.

User Note: The final effectiveness of the timecode signal must now be verified through the

specific software calibration of your DVS system.

4. Finalization and Long-Term Protection

The BBR Clinic process doesn’t end with the physical correction of the media. To ensure the results remain consistent over time and to prevent new contamination, every Serato Control vinyl undergoes a strict final protection protocol:

  • Zerostat Treatment: We utilize Zerostat piezoelectric technology to completely neutralize residual electrostatic charges on the PVC surface. This step is essential to prevent the record from attracting dust immediately after restoration, ensuring clean tracking from the very first use in the booth.

  • Archival-Grade Inner Sleeve: The vinyl is never returned to its old sleeve (often a source of scratches and static buildup). Instead, it is housed in a brand-new, heavy-duty anti-static inner sleeve.

This superior protection preserves the disc's flatness and groove integrity against humidity and friction.

5. BBR Clinic Operational Certification

Every intervention is fully documented and certified. As shown in our laboratory images, each record is returned with:

  • Certification Label: An operational note applied to the sleeve, certifying the thermal recovery cycles performed, the date of intervention, and the flatness tolerance achieved (e.g., Tolerance < 0.5%).

  • Technical Report (PDF): The client receives a detailed digital technical report,

including comparative MAAT Goniometer screenshots (Pre vs. Post Restoration).

This document serves as a true "medical record" for the media, certifying the recovery

of phase coherence and the stability of the 1kHz control signal.

Why choose the BBR Protocol?

We don’t just deliver a "flat" record. We provide a fully regenerated technical

medium—protected and certified according to the highest global mastering studio standards.
